I was 16 when the 1979 Islamic revolution erupted in Iran. A teenager questioning the brutal dictatorship of the Shah. I did the forbidden and unthinkable for any girl in Iran’s ancient, insular, and protective Jewish community - I devoured Islam’s political ideology, adopted Shia’a Islamic practice, and joined the revolution.
My choice to participate with revolutionary Muslim groups brought shame and fear to my family and our community. They vehemently disowned me. I had evolved into a two headed creature: Jewish and Muslim at once.
My memoir Mirrors On Fire is timely. It is the coming-of-age story of an idealistic Jewish girl in revolutionary Iran, developing a personal but controversial purpose during a historic moment. My journey led to unexpected and miraculous love, resulting in an unthinkable personal encounter with Ayatollah Khomeini, founder of the revolution.
